Unfortunately there is not much relationship between these two words. 

The first word KOBAN こばん 小判 was a gold coin which varied in weight and size depending on the year it was produced by the Tokugawa shogunate.

The word KOUBAN こうばん 交番 is a small police box or neighbourhood police station. (remember the extra う when pronouncing this word.

We found that KOBAN is used for 'Police Box' (rather than Police Station). Is this a different word? or is it somehow related to this koban?
