To study (masu form) is "べんきょうします" so whats the difference between 研究 and べんきょうします?

The main difference I think is that the emphasis on 研究 is the research aspect of it. It has a sort of feel that you are studying at a higher level. For example, I don't think you'd use 研究 when you are just starting to study Japanese, but you might if you had been studying it for a number of years and were studying it at an advanced level.

I'm very new at learning Japanese, but from the texts above, it looks like 研究 is "THE study" (a noun) where as genkumasu means "TO study" (a verb)
